Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)

Description

The SUD theory course highlights & focuses on the risks & hazards of driving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in UK cities. The course equips drivers with the knowledge & skills needed to share the road
safely with vulnerable road users (VRUs), pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists & horse riders.
SUD is essential training for all commercial drivers operating HGVs & Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) regularly in the urban environment & where there
are high volumes of VRUs.
This module is designed to help drivers improve road safety by increasing their hazard perception skills & teaching them to adopt defensive &
advanced driving skills by gaining first-hand experience as a vulnerable road user. (VRU) Through the on-cycle hazard awareness practical they will
gain a clearer understanding why cyclists behave the way they do.
Any risks undertaken during off & on-road training are taken in the view that they will significantly decrease future risks to vulnerable road users by
providing realistic & relevant experience through real life training. All training staff are trained & mentored on 'dynamic' risk assessments. A risk
assessment will be conducted & documented prior to the delivery of all training.
The safe urban driving practical module is essential training for all commercial drivers operating HGVs & Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) regularly in the
urban environment & where there are high volumes of VRUs, such as cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists & horse riders.
This element of the course is delivered in the classroom as a contingency measure only to be used in the most extreme weather when cycling is
impossible due to extreme cold, wind, rain, or heat. During the session, weather conditions will be monitored regularly & any opportunity to cycle will
