Description

By the end of the course the drivers should be able to:
- Discuss different regulations and Codes of Practice relevent to the operation of the Hydraulic Lorry Loader (e.g. LOLER, PUWER, H&S at Work Act etc.)
- Identify different types of vehicle-mounted lorry loaders, PPE required, main lorry loader components, main vehicle components (as applicable), capacities and capabilities, attachment types, Mounting and dismounting the vehicle/lorry bed, Controls and instruments.
- Demonstrate the operation of the main components of the hydraulic system, Activating the PTO, Key custody arrangements, Hazard identification, Siting the machine, Deploying the stabilisers, Stowing the stabilisers for transportation, the importance of observations and safe operator positioning, smooth and sympathetic use of the control types applicable to the equipment, releasing transportation locks and safety catches (where applicable), deploying the VMHLL from its stowed position/transportation position, Manoeuvring the VMHLL to various boom configurations, throughout its full operating range, Relocation of rolling base VMHLL (where applicable), Stowing the lorry loader in its transport position, Observation of the stabilisers during use to ensure stability is maintained.
- Understand Legislative responsibilities for carrying out a pre-use inspection, the risks associated with mechanical and hydraulic failure, defect reporting procedure, PPE used during pre-use inspection, Manufacturer handbook guidance, Relevant safe operating procedures.
- Discuss and/or demonstrate attaching a load, Suitable operating position, ensuring that the area to receive the load is prepared, carrying out all-round observations before and during the lift, safe and sympathetic use of the controls, carrying out a precision (test) lift, use of rated capacity indicators, use of a slinger/signaller (if applicable), basic lifting operations, use of direct cycle, control of load swing (if applicable), safe deposit of load, at ground level and on the vehicle load bed.
