To have explained and make understood through the course handbook, examples, exercises,
powerpoint and
videos/DVDs:
the reasons for safe manual handling and how manual handling risk assessments contribute to
improving health and
safety within the goods and passenger transport industries;
the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling
safety;
how to apply safe manual handling principles and why it's important to lift items correctly
throughout the day.
To have explained and make understood through the course handbook, examples, exercises, powerpoint and videos/DVD's:
of what the HSE and DVSA say about safe loading, the principles of load safety, over loading, load security and restraints, load
shift,
diminishing loads, height indicators, bridge strikes especially the huge
fines potentially associated with railway bridges;
of what the HSE 'says' regarding health and safety, the powers of HSE Inspectors, the reality of manslaughter and legislation;
the substances and the different classes of ADR (Hazchem);
a confirmation of the position of the HSE regarding load securing and load security, statistics and importance of the 3 points of
contact;
the importance of wearing the correct PPE and ensuring it is looked after and look-out for and adhere to safety instructions and
signs;
that good practices are followed at all times and not to use poor working practices;
the law and importance of wearing seat belts and potential consequences of not wearing them;
examples of negligence and what happens when things 'go wrong'.
