Recognize the unique vulnerabilities and challenges faced by each vulnerable road user group and other at-risk road users (including Pedestrians - General, Elderly, Disabled, and Children;
Cyclists; Mobility Scooter Users; Electric Scooter & Bike Users; Motorcyclists; Horse Riders; Animals; New Drivers, Learner Drivers, Parents with Children, and Elderly Drivers).
Interpret and apply relevant rules and regulations from the Highway Code to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users.
Understand the Hierarchy of Road Users and prioritize the safety of the most vulnerable in their driving decisions.
Analyze UK road safety statistics related to vulnerable road user accidents involving HGVs and PCVs.
Identify specifi c situations where the actions of vulnerable or at-risk road users may increase the risk of collisions.
Differentiate between the unique challenges faced by HGV and PCV drivers in interacting with vulnerable road users.
Implement defensive driving techniques and hazard perception skills to anticipate and avoid potential collisions.
Adapt their driving behavior and vehicle positioning to provide adequate space and protection for vulnerable road users.
Respond appropriately to the presence of animals on or near the road.
Recognize and address the challenges associated with other potentially at-risk vehicle users, such as new drivers, learners, parents with children, and elderly drivers.
Promote a positive and responsible attitude towards sharing the road with all users, fostering a culture of respect and safety within the transport industry.
Recognize and address the specific safety challenges presented by urban environments for HGV/PCV drivers.
Employ defensive driving strategies to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of vulnerable road users.
